Mesa, Arizona is a vibrant city located in Maricopa County, just 20 miles east of Phoenix. With a rich history dating back over 2,000 years, Mesa has grown from a small Mormon settlement into the third-largest city in Arizona.
The area was originally inhabited by the Hohokam people, who built an extensive network of canals that are still in use today. In 1877, Mormon pioneers arrived and established the first settlements, including Lehi in northern Mesa. The city was officially founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1883 with a population of just 300 people.
Mesa’s name, which means “table top” in Spanish, refers to its unique topography – a flat-topped, raised area where the first settlers built their homes. Over the years, Mesa has experienced significant growth, evolving from a small agricultural community into a thriving suburban city with a population of over 500,000.
Today, Mesa is known for its excellent quality of life, offering residents and visitors alike a perfect blend of suburban comfort and metropolitan amenities. The city boasts beautiful desert landscapes, including stunning views of the Superstition Mountains, as well as a rich cultural tapestry influenced by Native American, Mormon, and Hispanic heritage.
